What to Expect at Your First Sports Massage

Sports massage consultation at Muscle Relief Therapy Swansea

If you've never had a sports massage before, the idea of a stranger applying firm pressure to your muscles can feel a little daunting. But I can tell you — after their first session, the overwhelming reaction from new clients is "why didn't I do this sooner?"

Here's exactly what to expect at your first appointment at Muscle Relief Therapy in Swansea.

Before You Arrive

There's very little preparation required. A few simple things help:

  • Stay hydrated — well-hydrated muscles respond better to treatment and flush waste products more efficiently
  • Avoid heavy meals in the hour before your appointment
  • Wear comfortable clothing — or bring it to change into. You don't need to bring anything special

The Consultation (10–15 minutes)

Your session begins with a proper consultation — not a quick form to sign. I'll ask about your health history, any current injuries or pain, what you're hoping to achieve from the session, and what you do day-to-day (whether that's desk work, training, or physical labour). This information shapes everything about how I treat you.

If you've booked the Initial Consultation (£55), this also includes a full injury assessment — looking at your posture, range of motion, and movement patterns — before any hands-on work begins.

Sports massage isn't just for athletes. The majority of my clients come in for desk-related tension, postural issues, or just to feel better. You don't need to be training for anything to benefit.

The Treatment

Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to undress to your underwear. Towels and blankets are always provided for comfort and modesty, and I'll explain everything before it happens. You're always in control of what you're comfortable with.

The treatment itself uses a range of techniques depending on what your body needs — this might include effleurage (long gliding strokes to warm the tissue), petrissage (deeper kneading), targeted pressure on specific knots, or tools like the massage gun for percussion therapy.

Will it hurt? Some deeper work can produce a "good hurt" — a productive discomfort that feels therapeutic. I'll always check in throughout the session and adjust pressure to your comfort level. You should never feel pain you don't want to push through.

After Your Session

Most people feel a combination of relaxed and slightly tender in the treated areas for 24–48 hours after their first session — this is completely normal and a sign that the treatment did its job. A few things help recovery:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid intense training for 24 hours if possible
  • A warm bath or shower can ease any post-treatment tenderness

How Soon Will I Feel the Difference?

Many people notice an immediate improvement in how tight or restricted they felt before the session. For chronic conditions or long-standing tension, the best results typically come from a series of treatments rather than a single session — and I'll always give you an honest recommendation at the end of your first appointment.
